2010 Utility Conference

The 2010 I.B.E.W. Utility Conference was held in Hollywood, Florida from July 13, 2010 through July 16, 2010.  Local Union 160 had members present who joined over 475 delegates from over 100 unions located throughout the United States and Canada.  We were honored to have a number of excellent speakers including Carlo De Masi who is Secretary General of the Italian Federation of Electric Workers.  We also heard from David Goodwill who is the Vice President of Human Resources for Waukesha Electric.  Waukesha is a domestic manufacturer of power transformers located in Waukesha, Wisconsin.  David actually represents Waukesha's management and was very instrumental in working with the Union workers at Waukesha in negotiating a first contract.  Many people in the room were pleasantly surprised to see that there can be good working relationships between Labor and Management, although that "good working relationship" is missing for a lot of utility workers.  The most inspiring presentation for me and I suspect for the lion's share of the delegation was given by Jeff Espenship concerning job safety.  Jeff was an Air Force and commercial pilot who lost his brother in an airplane crash that was determined to be the result of not following a safety checklist.  As a result of the loss of his brother, Jeff has dedicated his career to seeing that all workers consider safety at all times and never take shortcuts.  The Utility Conference also allowed delegates time to talk with fellow union utility employees and to get their views on issues they deal with every day.  Everyone survived the heat and enjoyed a good convention.

In Solidarity,
Brother Jim Brereton
Local Union 160 Executive Board Member
